Segera Retreat
Segera Retreat lies at the very heart of the Laikipia Plateau, between the glorious Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west, and is both the home of the Zeitz Foundation headquarters and also one of the Long Run Destinations.
A stunningly diverse and seemingly magical environment, the Laikipia region boasts woodlands, grasslands and fertile riverbeds where water flowing from the Aberdare Mountains long ago gave rise to the Mutara River to the north, and the Ewaso Nyiro River to the south, and at Segera, it is not uncommon to see rangeland of elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, monkeys, cheetahs, giraffes, approximately 250 native bird species, and most of the East African plains game animals (including Grant's and Thompson's gazelles, eland, Jackson's hartebeest and Oryx). Endangered species such as the Grevy's zebra and the very rare African Wild Dog, whose population is now growing in remarkable numbers throughout all of Laikipia, also live here. Preserving the unique biodiversity in the Laikipia region is an essential cornerstone of the conservation efforts in Kenya as a whole. Here, wildlife populations and habitats are being conserved on mostly private and communal lands.
Segera Retreat is committed to the conservation of this landscape and its resources. Situated on 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of preserved land, Segera Retreat is a wildlife sanctuary that offers a unique experience of utmost luxury amidst natural beauty and personal enrichment from conscientious, sustainable living. The Segera lifestyle, focused around conservation, community, culture and commerce—the 4Cs—is carefully designed to inspire your soul as much as your .jpg) senses while promoting practices that impact the environment and the community in positive ways.
Segera's mission is to invest in research, listen to the experience of local communities and stakeholders, and apply the knowledge gained to create a sustainable, ecologically and socially responsible retreat that protects and preserves the integrity of the ecosystem found within it, encourages communication, participation and creative expression, and serves as a model for the vision of an Ecosphere in the healthiest possible state.
Segera successfully applies the Zeitz Foundation’s 4Cs approach on the ground.
