Samuel Eto’o’s Laikipia Unity Football Academy Ground Breaking Ceremony To Coincide With The Zeitz Foundation’s Laikipia Unity League Finals

Laikipia, 20th January 2014 – The ground breaking ceremony for the Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy and Environmental Education Centre is set to take place at Endana Secondary School on 26th January, coinciding with the finals of the Laikipia Unity League which will see the teams selected from the regional championships held on December last year battle it out for the top spot.

The Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy and Environmental Education Centre is part of the Zeitz Foundation’s Laikipia Unity Programme, an integrated and region-wide program that aims to cultivate peace and improve the standards of living – particularly for women and youth - and promote environmentally sustainable livelihoods across Laikipia County in Kenya.

The finals will see Laikipia University face off against Nanyuki Youth in the men’s play offs and Munyaka Girls Secondary will go against Community Outreach to determine who will be the winner in the girls’ category.

The league has 110 teams and is played within eight zones within Laikipia county and is unique in that 50% of points are scored through football achievements and 50% through conservation or community projects that each team has to undertake on an on-going basis.

For the past few months, the teams have been actively involved in the establishment of tree nurseries, tree planting initiatives, conservation agriculture, rain water harvesting, water and sanitation projects, community clean up campaigns, beekeeping and other activities in a bid to raise their off pitch points. The ceremony and finals will showcase some of these activities.

The Eto’o Academy and secondary school will also incorporate an Environmental Education and Outreach Centre and will serve as a Headquarters for the Laikipia Unity League/LUC and a hub for environmental outreach activities throughout the County.
