Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy, School and Environmental Education Centre Breaks Ground as Laikipia Unity League 2013 Concludes

The Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy, School and Environmental Education Centre broke ground on the 26th Januray 2014, with the cornerstone for the construction being laid by His Excellency the governor of Laikipia County Mr. Joshua Irungu.

The Samuel Eto’o Academy, the first of its kind in East Africa, is part of the Zeitz Foundation’s Laikipia Unity Progamme, an integrated and region-wide program that aims to cultivate peace and improve the standards of living – particularly for women and youth - and promote environmentally sustainable livelihoods across Laikipia County in Kenya.

The academy is set to become the model school for the county, with its infrastructure based on a unique architectural design developed by PITCH_Africa that will ensure the school becomes a high yield rainwater harvesting school.

In an area that receives less than 600mm of rain annually, the Samuel Eto’o Academy will consequently serve as the major rainwater harvesting demonstration site for Laikipia. The academy and secondary school will also incorporate an Environmental Education and Outreach Center and will serve as the Headquarters for the Laikipia Unity League and Laikipia Unity Cup, and the hub for the Zeitz Foundation’s environmental outreach activities.

The groundbreaking ceremony coincided with the finals of the Laikipia Unity League 2013 finals that saw Community Outreach Babes’ striker Naddy Otieno quash Gatero Girls hopes of lifting the cup by scoring the only goal in a entertaining match in the girls’ category.

In the men’s finals, Laikipia University shocked Nanyuki Youth with their 2 – nil lead during the first half of the game, with goals from captain Isaac Dube and Raymond Githinji. Nanyuki Youth were able to raise their fans’ hopes with a goal in the second half, but were forced to eat humble pie by the time the final whistle blew, with the final scores 2-1 to Laikipia University.

The governor honored the players by awarding them their medals and trophies that included footballs and solar lamps, generously donated by One World Football and Lighting Up East Africa Foundation.

The academy will include a football stadium, a pitch, four class rooms, an administration block, a girls’ dormitory for 100 students, a kitchen, a dining hall and an extension to the already existing boys’ dormitories.

The academy will provide opportunities and facilities for 40 youngsters to upgrade their football and education levels. Its main aim is to produce world class players who will also act as role models for the youth in the whole of Kenya and beyond.

Students will be selected from the Laikipia Unity League, which was launched by Eto’o in partnership with Zeitz Foundation. Selection will be based on football potential and achievements in social, cultural and environmental activities.

The project is sponsored by Samuel Eto’o Private Foundation, Cameron O’Reilly Family, Guernsey Overseas Aid and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
