Laikipia Programme Newsletter - September 2014

          Dear Friends and colleagues,

Welcome to the September 2014 edition of the Zeitz Foundations Laikipia Programme Newsletter, which shares information about the work that the Zeitz Foundation, Segera and our partners are doing throughout Laikipia. The aim of the Laikipia Programme is to strengthen sustainable ecosystems management through the practical application of our 4C’s (Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce) conceptual framework through the balance of biodiversity conservation, community development, cultural stewardship and social entrepreneurship.

The Zeitz Foundation’s approached in Laikipia is based on piloting innovative ‘4C’ solutions to the most pressing problems that face the people and environment of Laikipia in the immediate vicinity of Segera and scaling these up throughout Laikipia when and if they prove successful. As the articles in this newsletter demonstrate, these range from technical interventions in alternative energy, water, agriculture and promotion of nature based small scale business; to innovative approaches to addressing environmental governance and enhancing peace and unity in the County.

Our primary mechanism for scaling up interventions draws upon the enormous appeal of sport as a catalyst for engagement and change, through the Laikipia Unity Programme, which as you will read, has expanded rapidly over the last months, now involving 130 football teams and thousands of  youth from all corners of the County in a broad range of environmental and livelihood initiatives that have been successfully piloted around Segera.  The headquarters for the Laikipia Unity Programme is now almost complete with the finishing touches being undertaken at the Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy, School and Environmental Education Centre at Endana School. If you havn’t visited this yet, you may be interested to do so, it's a practical demonstration in how to manage water sustainably and undertake conservation agriculture in our semi-arid environment.

On behalf of the Zeitz Foundation and the communities with whom we work, a very warm thanks to all our partners and supporters in Kenya and internationally who make our work possible.
