Privately Protected Areas: a hot topic for the IUCN World Park Congress

Jochen Zeitz has been invited as the keynote at this year’s IUCN World Park Congress, a landmark global forum on protected areas, to be held at Sydney Australia this November from 12th -19th. More than 4,000 people from over 165 countries are expected to attend the event.

Mr. Zeitz will join other internationally recognised experts, politicians, CEOs, stakeholders and world leaders in the IUCN World Parks Congress’ prime time debates, the World Leaders’ Dialogues, to tackle the most pressing issues related to protected areas andto address the gap in the conservation and sustainable development agenda.

“Without ever generating income, we can only preserve so much of this planet, therefore we'll have to create concepts and ideas that are commercially based that will ultimately allow us to increase the amount of protected areas", he notes.

Mr. Zeitz is the founder of the Zeitz Foundation and the Long Run Initiative. The Zeitz Foundation's mission is to create and support sustainable, ecologically and socially responsible projects and destinations around the world to achieve long-lasting impact and sustainability through the holistic balance of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce (the 4Cs) in privately managed areas. The Long Run Initiative pursues the Zeitz Foundation’s mission internationally, enhancing ecosystems management, building recognition and support for the 4Cs approach to sustainability, and promoting and encouraging sustainable thinking globally.

Building on the theme “Parks, people, planet: Inspiring solutions”, the series of discussions will present, discuss and create original approaches for conservation and development, aimed at finding practical solutions to global threats to the world’s national parks, marine reserves and other protected areas from today’s biggest development challenges, such as climate change, health and food and water security. The Congress will set the agenda for protected areas’ conservation for the decade to come. Mr. Zeitz will make the case why the future of biodiversity and protected areas is at risk without realizing their economic potential through sustainable and responsible enterprise.  Agenda for the future must inevitably include privately protected areas.

Jochen Zeitz, the Director of Kering and Chairman of the board's sustainable development committee, is also the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of The B Team, a not-for-profit initiative that has been formed by a group of global business leaders to create a future where the purpose of business is to be a driving force for social, environmental and economic benefit.

Mr. Zeitz has received numerous awards during his professional career, including ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’, ‘Strategist of the Year’ for three years in a row by the Financial Times, ‘Trendsetter of the Year’, and ‘Best of European Business Award 2006’. Recently, he was awarded the 2013 Banksia International Award, the highest accolade Australia confers for environmental achievement internationally.
