        We Declare a Climate Emergency

The world is facing a terrifying reality that we are exceeding our planetary boundaries. The planet cannot sustain our current impacts, therefore the time for change is now. This is a climate emergency.

From dramatic weather changes to more intense natural disasters and a gradual extinction of biodiversity, the science is clear. It's time for an urgent and unified response.

We have therefore signed up to Tourism Declares, an initiative that supports businesses, organisations and individuals in declaring a climate emergency and taking purposeful action to counteract this crisis. Like all signatories, we have committed to the following five actions:

        1. Develop a ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ that sets out our intentions to reduce carbon emissions over the next decade. This will include the ZEITZ foundation's Tree of Life reforestation initiative, being launched in 2020, with the objective of planting up to 1 million new trees in the Greater Segera ecosystem (more news to follow).

        2. Share an initial public declaration of our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’, and update on progress each year.

        3. Accept current IPCC advice stating the need to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030 in order to keep the planet within 1.5 degrees of warming.

        4. Encourage our suppliers and partners to make the same declaration and share best practice amongst peers.

        5. Advocate for change. We recognise the need for a system change across the tourism industry and call for urgent regulatory action to accelerate a global transition towards zero carbon travel.

Originally founded by the ZEITZ foundation, The Long Run is now the world’s largest sustainable development movement led by nature based tourism businesses, safe-guarding over 21 million acres of nature in 22 countries worldwide, touching the lives of over 750,000 people and protecting over 30,000 plant and animal species. These secure conservation areas are cornerstones of biodiversity protection and fundimental to helping alleviate climate change. Through responsible land use, reforestation and security, these areas not only increase carbon sequestration but also ensure the survival of biodiversity and long-term viability of various ecosystems. In addition, they benefit their local communities by creating new and sustainable conservation economies, driving economic progress. Implemented and promoted on a global level, our common 4C Philosophy of balancing Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce ensures a holistic and sustainable approach to all forms of nature-based business and land management.
