Launched in 2009, the Long Run Initiative is the Zeitz Foundation’s flagship programme, built around Long Run Supporters; Long Run Alliance Members; and Long Run Destinations - Global Ecosphere Retreat
®
(GER) certified, but reaching out, into every aspect of our day to day life by putting the Long Run philosophy of acting today for a better tomorrow into practice.
 
 
 
 
 
The Charter applies across the Long Run InitiativeThe Long Run Charter is a declaration of intent and commitment to promoting more sustainable lifestyle choices. It is about building a sustainable future.
 
 
The Long Run Charter advocates actions in the areas of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce (the 4Cs), and supports the shared ethical foundation of being Fair, Honest, Positive and Creative.
 
 
All members of The Long Run Initiative sign The Long Run Charter and adhere to its principles. The Long Run Charter is the common thread running throughout the Long Run Initiative.
 

 

 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Long Run Supporters are organisations that share the Zeitz Foundation’s drive to support sustainable, ecologically and socially responsible projects around the world, and have demonstrated their commitment by signing the Long Run Charter.

Enhanced profile in an increasingly environmentally conscious world: As a Long Run Supporter you become part of a unique group that is committed to achieve the highest standards in sustainability through the holistic balance of conservation, community, culture and commerce (the 4Cs).

A means by which to pioneer ideas: The Long Run initiative provides trustworthy places on earth in which new technologies and approaches can be pioneered.

Access to unique opportunities: Long Run Destinations (GER® certified) are carrying out innovative projects that you can support in addition to your Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

Access to novel information: Being a Long Run Supporter enables you to access novel information generated from unique projects supported through the Long Run Initiative; placing you at the cutting edge of conceptual and practical approaches to sustainability.

Knowledge of best practice at your fingertips: Enjoy access to examples of best practice through horizontal and vertical knowledge sharing through our extensive global network of institutions.

The right to use our globally recognised tag line 'For The Long Run': As a Long Run Supporter you have the right to use the globally recognised tag line ‘For the Long Run’ and The Long Run logo, which demonstrates that you are part of a unique group that is genuinely committed to sustainability and believes in ’acting today for a better tomorrow’.

High-profile associations: As a Long Run Supporters you will be associated with the Zeitz Foundation’s network of high-profile Ambassadors and Specialists, such as World Champion athlete, Usain Bolt and François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of PPR.

 
 

 
 
Long Run Alliance Members (LRAMs) are institutions that directly manage or significantly influence the management of a natural area of conservation value with defined geographical boundaries that are committed to achieving sustainability through the 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce).

Global recognition for leadership in sustainability: Join a small, like-minded international alliance that will be a driving force in promoting and developing more sustainable thinking around the globe.

Exclusive access to information exchange forums: The Zeitz Foundation’s exclusive intranet enables you to connect with other passionate and committed LRAMs and Global Ecosphere Retreat® (GER) certified Long Run Destinations (LRDs) to share experiences and exchange ideas in a secure environment while giving you access to expert advice and guidance.

Added channels for innovation and co-creation: The Zeitz Foundation’s exclusive intranet also provides a platform for support and the exchange of best practice and lessons learned on issues related to conservation, communities, culture and commerce (the 4Cs) which allows for the co-creation of innovative approaches/strategies for the benefit of all members.

High-impact marketing opportunities: The Zeitz Foundation actively promotes LRAMs and their efforts to achieve sustainability in a variety of international print media (e.g. Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, Vanity Fair and Travellers World) and other news outlets, at international trade shows (e.g. International Tourism Exchange (ITB) Berlin) and through social networking media (facebook, twitter, youtube) and the Zeitz Foundation’s websites www.thelongrun.com and www.zeitzfoundation.org.


The current LRAMs are mostly tourism-driven enterprises or businesses involved in sustainable agriculture.

 

 
 
Long Run Destinations - Global Ecosphere Retreat
®
(GER) certified, are institutions that directly manage or significantly influence the management of a natural area of conservation value with defined geographical boundaries that have demonstrated their ability and commitment to achieve sustainablity through the 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce).
 
Long Run Destinations GER
® 
certified  pursue a range of environmental goals such as biodiversity conservation or forest restoration. But most of the destinations generate income from sustainable tourism by providing a bundle of superior services including luxury accommodation in simple yet elegant surroundings (LRDs provide temporary accommodation), unique nature experiences guided by conservationists and the opportunity to understand local culture by engaging in an exchange with local communities. Guests get a chance to experience the local way of life, sampling culinary specialities (LRDs serve food and drinks), visiting nearby villages and schools, and generally enjoying a wide range of holiday activities. These sites have been carefully selected and assessed by the Zeitz Foundation.

One-of-a-kind certification - Global Ecosphere Retreat® (GER) Certification: In receiving this certification your destination stands out as a leader in sustainable management practices making potential guests, media and public aware that you are at the pinnacle of your trade.

Tangible demonstration of your commitment to sustainability: GER® Certification demonstrates that you have acted upon your commitment to sustainability; highlighting your institution’s integrity and trustworthiness.

Expert input to strategic planning and implementation activities: Benefit from the assistance of Zeitz Foundation experts and international sustainable development leaders.

New funding opportunities: The Zeitz Foundation provides small grants to individual LRDs to assist you in carrying out innovative (GER® certification does not guarantee funding).

Branding as centres of excellence: In the long-term, through continuous innovation as a LRD (GER® certified) your business will earn a reputation as a centre for excellence.

 
 
The current LRDs include all existing founder members of the Long Run Initiative; LRAMs that have developed and implement a full E4Cs Plan and undergone external assessment; and potential Long Run Supporters that have progressed directly to LRD/GER 
®
 
membership at the invitation of ZF management

 
 
 
 
There are currently eight Long Run Destinations - Global Ecosphere Retreat
®
 
(GER) certified. These destinations have undergone the rigorous certification process and have demonstrated their ability and commitment to achieve sustainability through the 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce). These are  Chumbe LRD- Tanzania Monte Azul LRD - Costa RicaTahi LRD - New Zealand, Lapa Rios LRD- Costa Rica,  Caiman LRD - Brazil, Wanas LRD - Sweden, Nihiwatu LRD - Indonesia and Wolwedans LRD - Namibia.  
 

 
 
Socialcast is a platform for you to learn from other Long Run Destinations and share your knowledge and expertise. It is a place to ask questions, and contribute your best practice, know-how and documents, whilst benefiting from those of others.

Socialcast is not public but restricted to the Zeitz Foundation family - the LRAMs, LRDs and the ZF Ambassadors and Specialists.
